SAMBHAL, July 6 — An Instagram influencer with a following of more than one lakh people has been booked in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district for allegedly honey-trapping a man, obtaining private photographs and videos, and then blackmailing him for money.
The influencer, identified as Arisha, was named in a First Information Report along with two men, Anas and Shoaib. Police confirmed the allegations are under investigation and no conclusions have been reached so far.
According to the complaint, the accused allegedly extorted money from the complainant over an extended period. The situation escalated when they demanded an additional INR 2 lakh, which prompted the man to approach police.
Authorities said efforts are underway to trace the accused while verifying the allegations mentioned in the FIR.
Social media as a tool for extortion
This case highlights the use of social media platforms for alleged extortion schemes, a growing concern for communities across the region. For families in Sambhal and beyond, it raises questions about digital safety and the risks of sharing private content online.
For ordinary people across Asia, where Instagram and similar platforms have seen explosive growth in recent years, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers lurking behind seemingly harmless online interactions.
Closer to home, residents of Sambhal district are watching the case unfold with unease. The allegations involve a well-known local influencer, making the situation feel particularly close to many who follow her account.
Police have not disclosed the exact amount of money allegedly extorted from the complainant over the extended period, nor have they specified when the alleged honey-trapping began. What is clear is that the case follows a pattern seen in other parts of India, where social media influencers have been accused of using their platforms to identify and target victims.
What comes next
Authorities are now working to trace the three accused individuals. The investigation will determine whether the allegations hold up under scrutiny.
For now, the case remains open, with police emphasising that no conclusions have been reached. The outcome will likely be watched closely by those concerned about the intersection of social media influence and criminal activity in Uttar Pradesh.
The incident also underscores the importance of digital literacy and caution when interacting with strangers online, a message that resonates across communities from Sambhal to Manila and beyond.
