Timeline of the SSL Fraud Case: From Discovery to Trial Date

KINGSTON, July 16 — The long-running fraud case against a former employee of Stocks and Securities Limited (SSL) took a significant procedural step forward today, as a new trial date was set by a Supreme Court judge. The case, which has gripped Jamaica since early 2023, involves allegations of missing client funds and counts high-profile victims, including Olympic sprint legend Usain Bolt.

Justice Simone Wolfe Reece today vacated a previous trial date of May 4, 2026, and set a new start date of February 10, 2027, for the trial of Jean Ann Panton. Panton, a former SSL employee, has been in custody since her arrest in 2023.

She faces charges related to the alleged theft of billions of Jamaican dollars from client accounts. The court also scheduled a trial readiness hearing for December 10 of this year, along with a renewed bail application for Panton. This suggests the defence is continuing to press for her release while the case moves toward trial.

The judge’s decision to set a firm trial date, albeit months away, provides a clearer timeline for what has been a complex and closely watched investigation. The SSL scandal first emerged in January 2023, when Jamaican authorities announced an investigation into the investment firm after reports surfaced of missing client funds.

The case quickly drew international attention when it was revealed that Usain Bolt, the eight-time Olympic gold medalist, was among those affected. Reports at the time indicated that over $12 million had disappeared from Bolt’s account. The encouraging part for observers is that the judicial process is now on a defined track.

A trial readiness hearing in December will allow both the prosecution and defence to confirm they are prepared, and the renewed bail application gives Panton’s legal team another opportunity to argue for her release. The case raises serious questions about oversight within the Jamaican financial sector. Stocks and Securities Limited was a financial services company, and the alleged theft of client funds—particularly those of a national hero like Bolt—has shaken public confidence.

The source material does not specify how the thefts were allegedly carried out, nor does it name other victims, but the scale of the losses has been described as billions of Jamaican dollars. For now, the focus remains on the legal calendar.

The December hearing will be a key milestone, and the February 2027 trial date offers a concrete target.
