Thailand has become the first nation to launch the Microsoft Elevate AI and Jobs national coalition, a program designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and the demands of an evolving workforce. Announced on 15 October, the initiative seeks to prepare students, recent graduates, and mid-career professionals for a labor market increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence.
This effort arrives as global workforce requirements undergo rapid shifts. According to data cited by Microsoft, LinkedIn estimates that 70 percent of the skills required for most jobs globally will change by 2030, with AI acting as a primary driver of this transformation. Between 2023 and 2025, approximately 1.3 million high-skilled AI roles were created worldwide. Despite this growth, many students report that their formal education has not kept pace with the technology. Microsoft’s 2026 AI in Education research found that 77 percent of students have received no formal AI training in school, while 66 percent of educators expressed a desire for their institutions to offer such training on a monthly or quarterly basis.
A Strategy for Workforce Transformation
The initiative is scheduled to run its first phase from October 2026 through June 2027. The coalition aims to address educational gaps by establishing a workforce transformation framework and creating AI learning programs that align with the European Union’s DigComp 2.2 digital competence standards. By incorporating these credentials, the program intends to ensure that the skills taught in classrooms are recognized and valued by employers.
Beyond traditional coursework, the project will provide practical learning opportunities, including hackathons. These events are designed to allow participants to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios. The coalition will also utilize labor market intelligence provided by the Federation of Thai Industries and the recruitment platform JobsDB by SEEK. This data will help organizers align training curricula with the specific requirements of the current job market, creating a more direct path from education to employment.
Broad Collaboration Across Sectors
The coalition unites a wide range of government bodies, industry groups, and civil society partners. Government participants include the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, the Office of the Vocational Education Commission, the Department of Skill Development, the Department of Employment, and the Digital Economy Promotion Agency. Industry and civil society partners include the Digital Council of Thailand, Generation Thailand, and the Thai Fund Foundation.
Prof. Dr. Yodchanan Wongsawat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, stated that the initiative is about preparing the Thai workforce for an AI-powered world. This partnership supports the broader economic goal of the Royal Thai Government to meet OECD standards by 2030. For those navigating the workforce, the program represents an attempt to modernize training systems to match the pace of technological change.
Building on Existing Digital Foundations
This new coalition builds upon Microsoft’s previous efforts to improve digital literacy in the country. According to the company, its existing digital and AI skilling programs have reached more than 2.7 million people in Thailand over the past two years. The current initiative is part of a larger plan, as Thailand is the first of 19 countries selected by Microsoft to implement this specific national coalition model.
As the program moves into its initial implementation phase, the focus remains on connecting learners with sustainable career opportunities. By involving employers in the design of training pathways, the coalition aims to ensure that the workforce is equipped with relevant skills. This collaboration between public authorities, educational institutions, and the private sector serves as a pilot for how countries might navigate the transition toward an AI-integrated economy.
