Sri Lanka Arrests 37 Chinese Nationals in Online Fraud Raid

On May 3, 2026, authorities in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s largest city, detained 37 individuals from China on allegations of running an online fraud operation. Law enforcement officials reported that the suspects were taken into custody following a targeted inquiry into suspected fraudulent digital activities. Electronic equipment, including computers, laptops, and mobile phones, were confiscated during the operation, according to a statement released by Sri Lankan police. The seizure of these devices and SIM cards underscores mounting worries about cross-border cybercrime in the region.

Sri Lanka, a South Asian island nation with approximately 22 million residents, has intensified its campaign against cyber offenses in recent years. The country’s administrative capital is Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, while Colombo functions as its primary economic and cultural hub.

Situated with maritime boundaries near India, the Maldives, and Bangladesh, Sri Lanka occupies a geopolitically significant position. Police spokesperson Nihal Thalduwa confirmed that the suspects were discovered in possession of numerous electronic items, all of which were taken as evidence. The investigation remains active as authorities seek to identify the full scope of the alleged scheme.

Rohan Abeywickrema, a cybersecurity specialist at the Sri Lankan Institute of Technology, characterized the detentions as a notable advancement in the nation’s efforts against cybercrime. He emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration between law enforcement bodies and foreign allies to address this escalating threat.

The Sri Lankan government has been partnering with international entities such as the United States, the European Union, and Japan to bolster its cybersecurity infrastructure. These collaborations include training programs for police personnel and the development of legal frameworks to combat digital fraud. U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Julie Chung, stated that Washington remains dedicated to assisting Sri Lanka in countering cybercrime and strengthening cybersecurity.

She noted that such challenges demand coordinated international action. The United States has also engaged with Taiwan, Japan, and the Philippines to foster regional cooperation on these matters.

EU Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Denis Chaibi, similarly affirmed the European Union’s commitment to supporting the country’s cybersecurity initiatives. The EU has worked alongside partners including the United Kingdom and Israel to advance global cybersecurity efforts. Authorities have indicated that further inquiries into the alleged fraud activities will continue, with the aim of holding accountable all individuals involved.

The arrests mark a significant step in Sri Lanka’s broader strategy to combat transnational cyber threats.
