Volodymyr Zelenskyy

From Comedy to the Presidency

Zelenskyy was born on January 25, 1978, in the industrial city of Kryvyi Rih into a Russian-speaking Jewish family. After earning a law degree, he chose to pursue entertainment rather than legal practice. He co-founded the production company Kvartal 95, which created films, cartoons, and television shows. The most popular was the satirical series “Servant of the People,” in which Zelenskyy portrayed a teacher who unexpectedly becomes president. That fictional narrative later became the basis for a real political movement. In 2018, Zelenskyy and his Kvartal 95 associates founded the political party also named “Servant of the People.” He entered the 2019 presidential race as an anti-establishment and anti-corruption candidate, and opinion polls showed him as a frontrunner months before his formal declaration. He won a landslide victory with 73.23 percent of the vote, defeating the incumbent president by the largest electoral margin in the country’s history. Shortly after his inauguration, his party also won a snap parliamentary election.

In the early years of his presidency, Zelenskyy promoted e-government and sought unity between Ukrainian-speaking and Russian-speaking citizens. He made extensive use of social media. His administration oversaw limited progress on corruption, ended legal immunity for members of parliament, and managed Ukraine’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing economic downturn. On foreign policy, Zelenskyy attempted to end the war in the Donbas by implementing the Minsk agreements through a diplomatic formula and sought dialogue with the Russian president. In 2021, a large Russian military buildup on Ukraine’s borders and increased attacks by proxy forces triggered an international crisis. That situation escalated into the full-scale Russian invasion that began in 2022.

Wartime Leadership and Diplomacy

When the invasion began, Zelenskyy made a strategic decision to remain in Kyiv rather than evacuate. According to the official record, this choice transformed him into a symbol of Ukrainian resistance, both domestically and internationally. His personal history remains a distinctive element of his leadership. Before entering politics, he was a comedian and actor, and his performance as a teacher-turned-president in “Servant of the People” provided the narrative template for his actual rise to power. That background has drawn both admiration and skepticism, but his wartime conduct — particularly his refusal to leave Kyiv during the invasion’s opening weeks — has solidified his standing among Ukrainians.

Since the invasion, Zelenskyy has addressed numerous foreign parliaments and the United Nations, pressing Ukraine’s case for military and financial support. His diplomatic campaign has yielded substantial results. He has secured billions in Western aid, including $75 billion from the United States alone. His leadership remains central to Ukraine’s defense efforts, and as of 2024 he continues to serve as president under martial law.

Peace Formula and Conditions

In November 2022, Zelenskyy presented a 10-point peace formula that demands a full Russian withdrawal from Ukrainian territory. The plan covers security guarantees, territorial integrity, and accountability for war crimes. The formula represents the framework under which Ukraine is willing to negotiate an end to the war, but it requires a complete Russian pullout as a precondition. This position has drawn support from Western allies, though no significant breakthroughs in peace talks have been reported as of mid-2024.

Zelenskyy’s administration continues to press for additional military aid and enforce martial law across the country. His wartime role has made him the public face of Ukraine’s resistance, and his background as an entertainer-turned-president remains a unique element in modern statecraft. The trajectory that brought him to power — from a television set in Kryvyi Rih to the presidential office in Kyiv — now casts him as a wartime leader whose decisions on the battlefield and in diplomacy will shape Ukraine’s future for years to come.
