CUPERTINO, September 5 — Apple has widened the door for conversational AI inside the car. Anthropic’s Claude became the latest chatbot to land on CarPlay, joining a growing lineup of voice-activated assistants now available to drivers through Apple’s in-car platform. The Claude integration was reported by 9to5Mac on September 4, making it the second AI chatbot to gain CarPlay compatibility within a week.

Meta AI had arrived just days earlier.

Who’s in the Car Now

CarPlay now accommodates five major chatbot services. Alongside the newcomers Claude and Meta AI, Apple already supported ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Grok. The category itself opened up with iOS 26.4, which introduced a dedicated section for conversational apps on CarPlay.

For Claude specifically, this marks a first. The iPhone update to the Claude app is the initial release to include CarPlay support, according to MacRumors.

Inside the car, the interface is straightforward. Claude displays recent chats that drivers can pick back up. Users can also start fresh voice conversations through Claude’s built-in voice function.

Apple’s Broader Push

This isn’t the end of Apple’s AI roadmap for the dashboard. Siri AI is slated to join CarPlay starting with iOS 27, which is currently in beta and expected to see official release this month. That move would bring Apple’s own conversational AI directly into the vehicle alongside these third-party options.

The competitive tension is hard to miss. Each of these AI providers — Anthropic, Meta, OpenAI, Perplexity, xAI — is now jockeying for real estate on one of the most widely adopted automotive interfaces in the market.

Apple’s CarPlay has become standard equipment in a broad range of vehicles, giving drivers access to navigation, communication, and entertainment apps through voice control.

The Safety Question

Hands-free assistance is the promise. Drivers could ask questions, set reminders, or pull real-time information without lifting a finger from the wheel. Whether that promise holds depends on how tightly these chatbots integrate with CarPlay’s existing voice-control system — and whether they add cognitive load rather than reduce it.

Apple has not publicly outlined specific safety measures or usage guidelines for AI chatbot apps in the driving environment.

What to Watch

The CarPlay expansion arrives amid a busier-than-usual product season for Apple. 9to5Mac reported that the company plans to launch six major new products next week, suggesting the iOS 27 rollout with Siri AI for CarPlay fits into a larger announcement cycle. To access Claude or any of the supported chatbots, iPhone users need the latest version of the respective app and must be running iOS 26.4 or later. With Siri AI entering beta now and an official release expected within weeks, the dashboard is about to get noticeably more crowded — and more conversational.
