Volodymyr Zelenskyy: From Comedian to Wartime President

Volodymyr Zelenskyy

KYIV, July 15 — The shift is unmistakable: Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the comedian who once played a president on television, has become one of the most recognizable wartime leaders in modern history. But the trend underneath his transformation is not just about fame. It is about how a political outsider, elected on a wave of anti-establishment sentiment, has held a nation together through full-scale war.

Zelenskyy was born on January 25, 1978, in Kryvyi Rih, a city in central Ukraine. Before politics, he was a performer.

His breakout role came in the television series “Servant of the People,” which aired from 2015 to 2019. In the show, he played a teacher who becomes president.

From Screen to Ballot Box

In 2018, Zelenskyy founded a political party, naming it after the show: Servant of the People. The party was built on his celebrity. The bet paid off.

In the 2019 Ukrainian presidential election, Zelenskyy won in a landslide. The second round, held on April 21, 2019, saw him defeat the incumbent, Petro Poroshenko, with 73.2 percent of the vote.

He was inaugurated on May 20, 2019. That margin was staggering. A political novice had swept aside a sitting president with a mandate for change.

Then the full-scale war began.

War and a Global Stage

The invasion changed everything. Zelenskyy did not flee Kyiv. He stayed, and he started speaking.

On March 16, 2022, he addressed the U.S. Congress via video link. He has since addressed multiple international bodies.

His approval rating inside Ukraine surged. According to the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, his approval rating rose to over 90 percent in early 2022. As of July 2024, it remained above 80 percent.

Those numbers are striking. They reflect a leader who has become the public face of his country’s resistance.

Watch this space: the political capital Zelenskyy has built during the war will define the next phase of Ukrainian politics, whether that means negotiating peace, rebuilding the country, or holding elections under fire. What is changing now is the long-term question. A wartime president with extraordinary approval ratings will eventually face peacetime politics.

The same anti-establishment energy that carried him into office is now fused with the credibility of wartime leadership. That is a rare combination, and it is not clear how it will translate when the guns fall silent. For now, Zelenskyy remains the central figure in Ukraine’s story.

The man from Kryvyi Rih, the actor who became president, is now a global symbol. The next chapter is unwritten, but the trend underneath is clear: this is a leader who has already defied every expectation.
