Shooting Claims Four Lives at Silver Rail Elementary

BEND, October 16, 2026 — A shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday left four people dead and two others critically wounded, authorities confirmed. The suspect, a 16-year-old male, was killed by a bystander during the attack, according to police.

Victims and Suspect Identified

Three children and one teacher were killed in the shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School, police stated. The children killed were ages 5, 8, and 11. The teacher killed was identified as 25-year-old Megan Lambert. Two other victims, a 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher, were taken to St. Charles Medical Center with critical injuries, according to officials. The suspect was identified as Griffin J. John II, a Bend resident who previously attended Silver Rail Elementary but was not currently enrolled in the Bend-La Pine Schools district, police said.

Investigation Underway

The investigation into the motive and circumstances of the shooting is ongoing. Police Chief Mike Krantz reported the shooting began just before 1 p.m. Thursday when dispatchers received a 911 call from a person in a vehicle who had been shot at multiple times by someone with a long gun. Dozens of subsequent calls reported the suspect entering the school. Krantz stated the suspect forced entry by firing “multiple rounds” into the glass panes of the locked doors. The suspect then went directly into a classroom immediately to the left of the entry doors and fired as many as 15 rounds overall, with all victims shot in that classroom. Krantz confirmed the shooting occurred in a special needs classroom. The suspect used a 12-gauge shotgun, multiple sources told ABC News. Preliminary information indicates the shotgun was believed to be purchased by the suspect’s mother, though how the weapon and ammunition were obtained remains part of the active criminal investigation.

Community Response and Heroic Actions

The community reacted swiftly to the tragedy. Krantz revealed that when officers arrived within three minutes of the first 911 call, they found the suspect had been shot and killed by a bystander. “An officer reported that the suspect had been shot by a community member who had seen the suspect enter the school and pursued him into the school and engaged him,” Krantz stated. On Friday, the bystander came forward as Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old lifelong Bend resident with two daughters at the school. His family issued a statement saying he “is not seeking recognition, but instead wishes to express his gratitude to the first responders, school personnel, and community for the outpouring of love and support.” Krantz also described another teacher’s intervention as heroic. “One teacher threw her cellphone at the suspect and tackled him, fighting to take his firearm away,” he said. “She was not injured in that incident, but she almost certainly help prevent more bloodshed.”

Official Reactions and Support

School and city officials expressed profound grief and announced immediate support measures. Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook addressed families and staff, stating: “Today, an unthinkable tragedy happened at Silver Rail Elementary School. You did what no one should ever be asked to do. I am so grateful beyond words for your efforts.” All school activities were canceled for Friday, and crisis counselors were offered at the Central Library. Bend Mayor Melanie Kebler declared, “Our hearts are broken as we mourn this tragedy and the profound impact it has had on so many people, especially the children, families, educators and school staff whose lives have been forever changed.” She emphasized the city’s commitment to supporting families in the days ahead. Law enforcement from multiple agencies evacuated the school and transported students and staff to Journey Church for reunification. The search for a definitive motive continues, with Krantz acknowledging it “will require substantial investigative time” and admitting, “We may never get that full answer, but we want it.” Strategically, the calculus of such incidents forces a re-examination of security protocols in educational environments, particularly concerning access and the handling of individuals with prior connections but no current enrollment. The broader stakes extend beyond Bend, signaling persistent challenges in safeguarding community spaces against internal threats.
