October 8, 2026: Global Oil Markets Tremble as Tanker Attacks Rattle Middle East

Amid escalating geopolitical tensions, oil prices spiked following a fresh tanker attack in a strategic waterway, according to live market updates. The attack contributed to a jump in crude oil prices, with Brent crude reaching $101 per barrel. Despite the rise in prices, oil flows from the Persian Gulf continued to increase, even as Iran adopted a more aggressive posture in the region.

Data from September showed that Gulf oil flows averaged 81% of pre-war levels, indicating a partial recovery in exports despite ongoing disruptions. Middle East crude oil exports exceeded pre-war levels for part of September, though tanker attacks increased during the same period, creating a conflicting trend of rising supply amid heightened security risks.

Tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz hit a two-month low due to the surge in attacks, as reported by OilPrice.com. The attacks were linked to Ansar Allah (Houthi) forces, who struck Saudi oil infrastructure and an airbase in Khamis Mushait, wounding 73 people in one of the largest attacks on Saudi Arabia since the start of the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran in February. In response, Pakistan delivered a warning to Iran through diplomatic channels, urging Tehran to rein in its Houthi allies.

Saudi, Pakistani, and Iranian sources confirmed the coordinated effort to prevent escalation. Turkey also joined in signaling pressure on Iran over the attacks, forming part of a broader alignment dubbed the ‘Mecca Alliance’ involving Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan.

The alliance aimed at using military cooperation to counter Houthi aggression. Although Saudi oil exports were reported to have reached about 70% of their pre-conflict normal, the persistence of attacks continued to threaten stability in global energy markets. The situation contributed to broader market movements, including a dip in Bitcoin below $84,000, as investors reacted to the spike in oil prices driven by supply concerns.

The events underscored the interconnected nature of global markets, with disruptions in one sector rippling outward to others.

Looking Ahead

As the geopolitical landscape continues to shift, energy analysts will be closely watching oil markets for signs of further disruptions. The ‘Mecca Alliance’ may signal a more assertive stance from Saudi Arabia and its allies against Houthi aggression, potentially leading to a more stable supply of oil in the near future. However, the ongoing conflict between Iran and Saudi Arabia, as well as the broader U.S.-Israeli conflict, could continue to pose risks to global energy markets.

Investors and analysts will be watching these developments closely, ready to react to any sudden changes in the supply of oil.
