Mumbai Kala Ghoda Parking Scam: Fake Attendant Arrested After Instagram Expos\u00e9

MUMBAI, June 26 — The story begins, as so many modern scams do, with a smartphone and a sense of injustice. An Instagram video exposing an alleged parking scam at Kala Ghoda has led to the arrest of a 36-year-old man, after Mumbai police conducted a sting operation at a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) parking lot that is officially free to use. For those involved — the motorists who thought they were paying a legitimate fee — what unfolded was a classic con.

Police say the man was allegedly collecting money illegally by posing as a parking attendant at the BMC-operated lot near Kala Ghoda. The lot, maintained with public funds, is meant to cost drivers nothing.

At its heart, this was a crime of impersonation and extortion, exposed not by a whistleblower or a news investigation, but by a video circulating on Instagram. The footage showed what appeared to be unauthorised persons demanding money from drivers, and it prompted MRA Marg police to act. Police registered an FIR on June 23 after verifying the videos.

They then set up a sting operation that led to the arrest of the 36-year-old suspect. The man is accused of illegally collecting money from motorists at the free parking lot.

The case raises uncomfortable questions about how easily public spaces can be hijacked by those willing to exploit trust. For the drivers who paid, there was no receipt, no official uniform — just a man with a confident manner and a parking lot that wasn’t his to monetise. What happens next will depend on the police investigation and whether the man is linked to a wider network.

For now, the Instagram video that started it all remains a reminder that in Mumbai, sometimes the most effective watchdog is a citizen with a camera.
