Dumaguete City, July 13 — A sense of unease settles over the American expat and retiree community in the Dumaguete area after the killing of Kent Edward Carpenter, a 73-year-old American marine biologist and professor at Old Dominion University in Virginia, during a home invasion at his residence in Sibulan, Negros Oriental, near Dumaguete City, Philippines. On the night of July 12-13, three masked men broke into Carpenter’s home, shooting him in the head and tying up his Filipina partner, who was also assaulted.
The attackers made off with a laptop, cash, and a backpack, leaving a trail of fear and uncertainty in their wake. By nightfall, the news of Carpenter’s killing had spread, sending shockwaves through the community.
Investigation and Arrests
Police arrested Mark Bucog, the alleged gunman, and Jal Filipinas, on July 15 in Barangay Ajong, Sibulan. A third suspect, Ciem Diputado, an alleged lookout, surrendered, and five suspects have been charged with robbery with homicide. The Philippine National Police declared the case solved, saying no effort will be spared until justice is served.
The killing of Carpenter, who had taught at Old Dominion University since 1996 and collaborated with Silliman University in Dumaguete since 1976, has raised concerns about safety among the American expat and retiree community in the area. His planned retirement in September 2026 was cut short by this act of violence.
A Legacy of Marine Biology
Carpenter’s work in marine biology was renowned, and his collaboration with Silliman University had led to significant discoveries, including co-authoring a 2005 study that identified the Verde Island Passage as the center of marine shore fish biodiversity. His legacy will live on through his contributions to the field, but his killing serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that exist in the world. As the community comes to terms with the loss of Carpenter, residents describe a sense of sadness and unease that has settled over the area.
The scene outside his residence is one of quiet reflection, with many struggling to understand the motivations behind such a brutal act. By nightfall, the city will be grappling with the consequences of this tragedy, and the search for justice will continue.
Looking Ahead
As the investigation continues, and the perpetrators are brought to justice, the community will be watching to see how the authorities respond to this tragedy. Police have identified six suspects in total and are still hunting two fugitives, including one known by the alias Eden. For now, the people of Dumaguete City can only hope that justice will be served, and that the memory of Kent Edward Carpenter will not be forgotten.
