Beth Holloway Pursues Dutch Murder Charges Against Joran van der Sloot

Beth Holloway has filed a formal murder complaint against Joran van der Sloot with Dutch prosecutors, nearly two decades after her daughter Natalee vanished in Aruba. The move follows van der Sloot’s 2023 confession to killing the 18-year-old by blunt-force trauma.

By the Numbers

18 years: the gap between Natalee Holloway’s disappearance on May 30, 2005, and van der Sloot’s confession in October 2023. 28 years: the sentence van der Sloot is already serving in Peru for the 2010 murder of Stephany Flores Ramírez. The 2023 U.S. plea deal let him serve his federal extortion and wire-fraud time concurrently with that Peruvian sentence. The figure that matters: zero. Holloway’s remains have never been found, despite searches by Aruban authorities, the FBI, and Dutch military personnel.

The Bottom Line

Investors will note: the case cracked not through forensic breakthroughs but through a federal plea bargain and relentless parental pressure. Van der Sloot was arrested multiple times in Aruba but released each time for insufficient evidence. Aruban prosecutors closed the case in December 2007. Holloway was declared legally dead in January 2012 at her father’s request. The 2023 proffer agreement provided the first definitive account of the night she disappeared.

International Cooperation

The 2023 resolution required coordination across three justice systems. U.S. federal prosecutors leveraged extortion and wire-fraud charges — van der Sloot had attempted to sell information about Holloway’s remains to her family — to secure his extradition from Peru. The plea agreement allowed concurrent sentencing, a practical solution that avoided a prolonged U.S. trial while extracting a confession. Dutch investigative journalist Peter R. de Vries had previously obtained hidden-camera footage of van der Sloot admitting involvement in 2008. His son, Royce de Vries, now represents Beth Holloway in the Dutch murder complaint alongside attorney Annemiek van Spanje.

Persistent Advocacy

Beth Holloway spent nearly two decades pressuring authorities and the suspect directly. She confronted van der Sloot at his home in Aruba days after the disappearance. She maintained media attention, worked with investigators, and refused to accept the case’s closure. “The nightmare’s over, right? But I’m not done yet,” she said in the Netflix documentary Taken: Natalee Holloway. A Dutch prosecutor is now obtaining all case files. The complaint is, in her words, “in the hopper.”

What Comes Next

Dutch authorities must decide whether to pursue formal murder charges against a suspect already imprisoned abroad. Van der Sloot, now 39, remains in a Peruvian prison. The Netherlands has no statute of limitations for murder.
