Utah and BYU Clash as Undefeated Top-10 Rivals With Big 12 Title on the Line

SALT LAKE CITY, November 6, 2026 — No. 6 Utah and No. 8 BYU will meet Saturday at Rice-Eccles Stadium in the first top-10 matchup in the history of their rivalry. Both teams control their own path to the Big 12 Championship Game in Arlington.

Rivalry Reaches New Heights

The Holy War has never carried this kind of national weight. Utah enters 8-0. BYU sits at 7-1. The kickoff is set for 10 a.m. MST. For the first time, both programs arrive ranked inside the top 10, turning the state’s biggest annual sporting event into a playoff eliminator.

Big 12 Title Game on the Line

Seven Big 12 teams are still mathematically alive for two spots in the championship game, but only Utah and BYU hold their fate entirely in their own hands. The conference has made clear that no team with more than two conference losses will reach Arlington. A win Saturday guarantees the victor a place in the title game. Utah retains control of its destiny even with a loss, provided the Utes finish 8-1 in league play. BYU does not have that luxury. A second conference loss would force the Cougars to rely on Texas Tech and Houston each losing at least once down the stretch.

Tiebreaker Math Shifts in BYU’s Favor

Iowa State’s win over Oklahoma State last week improved BYU’s position in potential two-loss tiebreaker scenarios. If BYU wins out after a loss to Utah, the Cougars face roughly a coin-flip chance — about 50 percent — of still reaching Arlington. That percentage drops sharply if either Texas Tech or Houston wins out.

Utah’s Backfield Depth Tested

Sophomore running back Wayshawn Parker left the Cincinnati game at halftime with a quad contusion. He had rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown on seven carries before exiting. Coach Morgan Scalley said Parker “takes quite a lot of hits and dishes them out too,” noting the position’s inherent wear. His status for Saturday remains unclear. In his absence, four backs — Daniel Bray, LaMarcus Bell, Mateaki Helu and Steve Chavez-Soto — combined for 120 rushing yards and three touchdowns against the Bearcats. Bray led the group with 75 yards and a score on eight carries, adding two catches for 16 yards and another touchdown.

Playoff Implications Loom Large

For BYU, the stakes extend beyond the Big 12. A win over Utah, combined with favorable results elsewhere — notably Notre Dame over Miami and Ole Miss over Georgia — could vault the Cougars to No. 1 in the next College Football Playoff rankings. Even two of those three outcomes going BYU’s way would likely place the program inside the top five. A loss, however, would likely drop BYU out of the projected playoff field entirely. The Cougars’ track record with the selection committee suggests a 10-2 at-large bid is unlikely, making a conference championship the only realistic playoff path.

Cooley Makes NHL History

While the city focuses on Saturday, Utah Mammoth center Logan Cooley authored a milestone Tuesday night in Montreal. He recorded his fifth career hat trick in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Canadiens, becoming the fastest active player to reach five hat tricks at 228 games — two fewer than Alex Ovechkin. Cooley factored on all four Utah goals and has 11 goals through 11 road games this season, tied for fifth in the NHL.

Jazz Search for Answers in Dallas

The Utah Jazz remain winless in November, shooting 27.6 percent on wide-open three-pointers. They face the Dallas Mavericks Friday in an NBA Cup West Group A matchup at American Airlines Center. Dallas enters 4-4 and leads the group at 1-0 after beating Houston. The Mavericks play at one of the league’s fastest paces, led by Cooper Flagg, who averages 34 points, 8.5 rebounds and 7 assists in two career games against Utah.

Aggies Open New Era Monday

Utah State men’s basketball begins its 122nd season and first in the Pac-12 on Monday against Idaho State at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m. New head coach Ben Jacobson, hired in March after 20 seasons at Northern Iowa, takes over a program coming off a 29-win season and an NCAA Tournament victory. Season tickets are sold out.
